Charlotte Runner Summer WK1 2015

Charlotte Summer track scene kicked off in fine fashion yesterday evening at Myers Park High School. The 50 meter runners sprinted down the track starting around 6:15 PM. Followed by the mile at 6:45 and the 4 x 100, then the 400, 800, 200, and the evening finished off with the 3200.

As has become the norm, the first week just follows Memorial Day so the turnout is rather low. While it is disappointing, I do understand it. Usually, the turnout improves during weeks 2 thru 4.

Watching everyone give their best only made me want even more to be out there running. But I am sticking with my plan and not participating this year. Running well this fall is a lot more important to me than attempting a fast mile this summer. The risk of pulling my hamstring is just too high.

Therefore, I spent my time watching and helping out Tim, Tom, and Steve wherever they needed it. Actually, it felt kind of good. Supporting other runners can be just as rewarding as winning an award.

On a similar note, Meredith brought out the entire Running Works clan last night. They did really well in the mile race and then in the 4 x 100 relay race. I am a big admirer of Meredith. She is 100% committed and it shows with everything that she does. I don’t know how she does it all, but if I could ever learn her secret to success, I would buy it in a New York Minute.

Summer track runs for 4 more weeks and you don't have to preregister. You can just show up on Tuesday evenings. They will gladly accept cash. For $8 bucks you can run all of the events that you want.

Evening Runs


This injury has also forced me to change up my training schedule. Typically, I am a morning runner. I like rising before the rooster has a chance to make its self known and hitting the roads early. Doing so leaves me ready to tackle the activities of the day long before most people have had the chance to hit their snooze button for the first time.

That is until this injury.

Lately, I have found myself heading out the door for an evening run. Partly because of the extended daylight hours makes running in the evening much delightful and partly due to the warmer temps make it easier on my hamstring.

Those first 30 to 45 minutes the sweat rolls down the sides of my face. Then, a miraculous transition starts to happen. The sun reaches the edge of the horizon. The temperatures dip down. Suddenly, the last 20 to 30 minutes, my body comes alive. I really fill like running. This makes me yearn to run some hard fast miles.

Whether you are a morning, noon, or evening runner always remember to take a moment to enjoy the day. We so often get drawn up in the daily activities of our lives that we miss much of what’s going on around.

Remember, each day is a blessing that should be appreciated and enjoyed to its fullest.

CRC's Let Me Run Water Stop


Saturday afternoon, the Let Me Run crew held their annual 5k beside Blythe Elementary school near Huntersville, NC. I joined Mike, Eric, Steve, Brent, and few others to work our water stop just before 1 mile and just after 2 miles.

Giving back to running is always nice because running has given me a lot. Giving back to running through events like what Let Me Run does is extra special. These young men are the next generation of runners. Sometimes, it is just that small amount of encouragement at the just the right time in their lives that makes all of the difference.
 

They flowed in to our water stop as if we were an oasis in the desert. At one point, Eric and I just stood next to the table while handing out cup and cup of water fast as possible.


Our Charlotte Running Club is a huge supporter of Let Me Run, and there is a strong likely hood that we will be back next year to help out in some capacity. We would love the help so please get involved.

Summer Track coming up later this month

During the summer months, the temperatures practically draw us outside our homes. The welcome change from wearing gloves, hats, and 2 extra layers of cloths is oh so very nice.

I can personally vouch for loving the summer months more than the winter months. Yet, while running in the summer months is quite nice, racing in the South during the summertime is anything but easy for just about every runner. Anything longer than a 5k race becomes more of a heat endurance test rather than a test of aerobic capacity.

There are alternatives to racing on the roads.

Run for Your Life offers a fine summer track series at Myers Park High School.

Starting on May 26 (Tuesday nights) and running through end of June, they offer track events from 50 meters for kids to 3200 meters or a 5k depending on the week. Activities kick off around 6pm with the mile race starting around 6:45.

The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids for a single week. Or get a Season Pass for $35 which includes a tech shirt.

No pain, lots of gains

The old adage “No pain, no gain” doesn’t really take injuries into account. I suspect; any previously injured runner will tell you that no pain is really a huge gain in their mind. A gain they will gladly accept at any point.

My hamstring recovery continues to move along very well. To prove it to myself, I decided to test it with an 8 mile run on Thursday. There was no pain during the run. The soreness continues to hang around post run. A few times along the way, I did have to slow down but otherwise, I finally got to enjoy some of this fine spring running weather.

There is still some work to do because my hamstring fatiqued pretty badly during the later miles of this run and the soreness makes setting normally after about 5 minutes impossible.

5 weeks ago I was expecting it to be months before I felt near normal running. Now, I hope by June to be back running some normal mileage again.
