Charlotte Summer Track Wk #2

Charlotte's Summer Track series is already in its second week. From the looks of it, the number of runners nearly doubled.

I love watching the 50 and 100 meter races. The young kids are so funny. They sprint; they walk, the wander across the lanes; finally, they finish with an all out sprint the last few yards. Then, they collapse on to the grass as if they just finished a 100 mile race. 30 seconds later, they pop up to go running off with their friends as if they were never even tired.

This is followed by the mile race. Here the kids that are a little older make running look easy as they gallop around the track. They are joined by those runners that are or let's just say more experienced. These runners are chasing days of past glory. Hoping the brain can "will" the body to do it just one more time.

4 x 100 brings its own interesting points. The young kinds sprint with all their might to their buddy awaiting a 100 meters away. The exchange is made as if one were handing another a cup of coffee. Neither is moving and hand off oh so careful. Contrast this with the high schoolers, they make a smooth, fluid, running transition just like I would have expected. Still, there is the very young group who don't grasp the relay concept, and just run/walk because their parent is cheering excitedly on the sideline.

Tuesday night 6:30 during the month of June is a great way to get your kid exposed to running in a nice, safe, and encouraging environment.

See you next Tuesday,

Cool Down Runner
